Try to be thankful during the holidays

The holidays are here and almost gone. For those of us who are single this is probably the worst time of the year. During this time we tend to dwell on the things we don't have, i.e. a significant other. We are depressed and miserable wishing we could skip right over the last 2 weeks of December and head straight into the New Year. Well, unfortunately we can't do that. Not unless some one has a time machine!

Instead of wasting our time dwelling on the things we don't have why don't we take a few minutes and make a list, in no particular order, of the things we do have and be thankful for them.

1. Family - I don't have any brothers and sisters but I am lucky enough to still have my parents with me. Many people my age have either lost one or both of their parents and/or their parents are divorced or separated. If you still have one or have them both; whether they are together or not; be thankful. If you have any siblings, be thankful. And if you have been blessed with children, be thankful. Many couples are dying to have them and are not even able to adopt.

2. Job - There are many people in the US who are currently unemployed. I am sure you've been watching the news and know that this country is in financial trouble. There are so many companies going out of business every day and that leaves thousands of people without jobs. So, even if you hate your job, be thankful that you have one.

3. Home - If you have a roof over your head whether it's rented or your own; be thankful. There are a lot of people losing their homes due to the financial crisis.

4. Friends - Yes, they can drive you crazy sometimes but hey, I am sure you drive them crazy too. They are there for you through good or bad. Cherish their friendship and be thankful they are a part of your life.

5. Health - Try not to get all stressed out during this time or any time of the year. Don't lose any sleep thinking about all of the holiday parties and New Year 's Eve parties you don't want to go to because you don't have anyone to kiss under the mistletoe or at midnight. Your mental and physical health is very important. Be thankful for your health and keep a positive attitude.

6. Faith - You don't have to be affiliated with any religion to have faith.

7. Hope - Your other half is out there. It might take a little longer for you to find him/her but don't lose hope. It is possible that you are not ready for this person just yet. He/she will come along when you least expect it. In the meantime, enjoy your life and be thankful for what you have!

These are just a few things I came up with in 10 minutes. How many did you come up with? Have a wonderful and blessed new year and may 2009 bring you the love of your life!
